I have a confession to make... Hi, I am Tope and I am a recovering Trekie.
It started back in the 90s as a child when I got hooked on the 'gateway' Star Trek for my generation, Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As the opening sequence of each episode began, featuring the epic visuals loved by all Trekies, with a view of stars streaking by at warp speed, a majestic orchestral piece would commence, the U.S.S Enterprise would glide through space and then the Shakespearean trained, commanding, baritone voice of Captain Jean-Luc Picard would deliver the iconic opening monologue:
"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!"
There were 178 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation so I have listened to Captain Picard's monologue at least 178 times in full and each time was always as good as the first because I knew I was about to embark on the best hour of the week (These were the days before Netflix and binge watching).
Two Quick Reasons Why Star Trek Was Great
So what was the lure of Star Trek for me? Well I'll give you two quick reasons why Star Trek: The Next Generation, along with the other series were so great.
Firstly they presented an optimistic vision of humanity's future, one where we had worked through the challenges of our joint past and present to create a future where humanity might have to battle the Klingons in space but at least back on Earth there was no poverty, no war and no environmental damage.
The second reason was to see what crazy, outlandish gadgets the show thought humans would have in the future.
Who remembers Captain Kirk trying to contact the 1960s Enterprise from an alien planet using some weird looking device called a 'Communicator', pure Sci-Fi the time.. But oh wait we all have 'mobile phones' now and astronauts have made calls from the moon.
Ok how about Holodecks, where the crew of 1990s Enterprise would immerse themselves in a virtual reality environments simulating various real and imaginary settings... Oh wait we have Virtual Reality now and the online space in general.
Actually, now I think about it there is something else Star Trek got wrong, and specifically Captain Picard, Space is not the final frontier, the human imagination is the real final frontier.

So what does Star Trek have to do with AI art?
Well, it's about the vision we have for the future and courage to boldly go where no one has gone before.
We find ourselves on the cusp of a new era, where our ever reliable and constant partner, technology, with us since the fire control, the wheel and sliced bread has presented us with another gift: Artificial Intelligence.

But crucially and most importantly, your imagination is the secret magical ingredient.
Christie's Record Price for AI Art
One of my favourite examples is an AI painting titled "Portrait of Edmond de Belamy." This piece was created by a Paris-based art collective named Obvious using an algorithm called GAN (Generative Adversarial Network).
The result? A fascinating portrait that sparked a bidding war at Christie's auction house and sold for an astonishing $432,500!

Now, you might be wondering, "How did we get here? And what does AI have to do with art?" Well, let's hop in our time machine and rewind a little.
The relationship between technology and art is far from new. Let's take, for instance, the Camera Obscura, a device that led to the invention of photography.
It was initially used by artists to understand perspective and details more accurately. Remember the stunning detail in Vermeer's paintings? Many believe he used a Camera Obscura, and his works still captivate us centuries later!
The advent of a new technology has usually been followed by crises of the demise of the current art form, for example the quote below from Constantijn Huygens, a prominent Dutch statesman, diplomat, and poet during the 17th century, known for his significant contributions to the cultural and intellectual life of the Dutch Golden Age.
It is impossible to express the beauty [of the camera obscura image] in words. The art of painting is dead, for this is life itself: or something higher, if we could find a word for it.

This news of the death of painting as we all know was very much premature and subsequently painted master pieces after 1622 and the Camera Obscura include:

Cogito, ergo sum
The French mathematician and philosopher René Descartes, famously said "I think, therefore I am" but in a world where AI too can 'think' then what is the true nature of our reality and existence and what makes us uniquely human?
And what better way to discover the real truth than by stress testing preconceived ideas of what it means to be human, this is the gauntlet laid down by AI art to human creativity.
In chemistry for example substances are sometimes added to another substance to purify them. In the process of Recrystallization, a solid compound is dissolved in a hot solvent, allowing impurities to remain in the solution. As the solution cools, pure crystals reform, separating from the impurities.
It's process I used during my Chemistry A' Level to make and purify Aspirin. (Ok since you asked so nicely I'll tell you how it's done...After synthesizing aspirin from salicylic acid obtained from a Willow bark and acetic anhydride, impurities like unreacted acids remain. Dissolving the crude aspirin in hot ethanol followed by slow cooling and scratching induces recrystallization, resulting in pure aspirin.)

A conversation between a Cave painter and a Renaissance artist
Cave Painter (CP): Look here, youngling! I smear my hands in the earth, reach out and leave my mark on the stone. Raw, primal, connected to the land. This is real art!
Renaissance Painter (RP): Quite fascinating, old man, but rather rudimentary, don't you think? I study light, form, perspective - elevating the human figure to an almost divine level. Surely, that's more sophisticated art!
CP: Ah! 'Sophistication', he says! Your forms and light and perspective...do they capture the rhythm of the hunt, the dance of the flames, the whisper of the wind?
RP: Well, not exactly. But I capture the glory of man, his intellectual and emotional depths. My works hang in the grandest of cathedrals!
CP: And my works hang in the grandest of caves! What's your point?
RP: Simply that art has evolved. We've moved from mere depiction to exploration and celebration of the human spirit.
CP: Evolved, yes, but not replaced. The spirit of my strokes, in their simplicity, captures a raw, emotional truth. That too is celebration, of a different kind. What's 'real' art, after all?
RP: 'Real' art... maybe it's not about sophistication or simplicity, but about truth. Whether in a grand cathedral or a humble cave, it's that which stirs the soul.
CP: Ha! Stirring the soul, are we? Well, you and your fancy words! But, you might be onto something. A truth, a stirring, a connection...maybe that is 'real' art.
