FROM CAVE PAINTINGS TO PIXELS - WHY AI ART WILL CREATE THE NEXT MASTERPIECE

Pixel Gallery Artwork in Manhattan Penthouse

I have a confession to make... Hi, I am Tope and I am a recovering Trekie.

It started back in the 90s as a child when I got hooked on the 'gateway' Star Trek for my generation, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

As the opening sequence of each episode began, featuring the epic visuals loved by all Trekies, with a view of stars streaking by at warp speed, a majestic orchestral piece would commence, the U.S.S Enterprise would glide through space and then the Shakespearean trained, commanding, baritone voice of Captain Jean-Luc Picard would deliver the iconic opening monologue:

"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before!"

There were 178 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation so I have listened to Captain Picard's monologue at least 178 times in full and each time was always as good as the first because I knew I was about to embark on the best hour of the week (These were the days before Netflix and binge watching).

Two Quick Reasons Why Star Trek Was Great

So what was the lure of Star Trek for me? Well I'll give you two quick reasons why Star Trek: The Next Generation, along with the other series were so great.

Firstly they presented an optimistic vision of humanity's future, one where we had worked through the challenges of our joint past and present to create a future where humanity might have to battle the Klingons in space but at least back on Earth there was no poverty, no war and no environmental damage.

The second reason was to see what crazy, outlandish gadgets the show thought humans would have in the future.

Who remembers Captain Kirk trying to contact the 1960s Enterprise from an alien planet using some weird looking device called a 'Communicator', pure Sci-Fi the time.. But oh wait we all have 'mobile phones' now and astronauts have made calls from the moon.

Captain Kirk with a Communicator

Ok how about Holodecks, where the crew of 1990s Enterprise would immerse themselves in a virtual reality environments simulating various real and imaginary settings... Oh wait we have Virtual Reality now and the online space in general.

Actually, now I think about it there is something else Star Trek got wrong, and specifically Captain Picard, Space is not the final frontier, the human imagination is the real final frontier.

I told that story about Star Trek to tell you this one about AI Art

So what does Star Trek have to do with AI art?

Well, it's about the vision we have for the future and courage to boldly go where no one has gone before.

We find ourselves on the cusp of a new era, where our ever reliable and constant partner, technology, with us since the fire control, the wheel and sliced bread has presented us with another gift: Artificial Intelligence.

It's a new brush stroke on the canvas of artistic expression, and it's creating masterpieces that are shaking the very foundations of the art world.

Historical Context of Art and Technology

Early artists used rudimentary tools like handmade brushes, charcoal, and natural pigments to create cave paintings that depicted their environments.

Millennia later, the invention of oil paint in the 15th century allowed Renaissance masters like Van Eyck to blend subtle pigments and glazes and render figures with a lifelike luminosity never before seen, pushing art to unprecedented heights of realism and detail.

In the 19th century, the creation of portable paint tubes gave birth to Impressionism as artists like Monet could now easily paint in open air.

And so the evolution of art continues, today, AI stands on the precipice of creating its own artistic revolution, and I assure you, it's an adventure you'll want to be a part of.

AI, with its complex neural networks and machine learning capabilities, has started to create artwork that is, quite simply, unbelievable. It's as if AI has taken a deep dive into the annals of art history, learned from every brush stroke, every colour choice, every theory, every style, sat down for a fireside chat with every artist and emerged with its own artistic voice.

But crucially and most importantly, your imagination is the secret magical ingredient.

Christie's Record Price for AI Art

One of my favourite examples is an AI painting titled "Portrait of Edmond de Belamy." This piece was created by a Paris-based art collective named Obvious using an algorithm called GAN (Generative Adversarial Network).

The result? A fascinating portrait that sparked a bidding war at Christie's auction house and sold for an astonishing $432,500!

But what's truly remarkable isn't just the price tag. It's the fact that AI, a technology we often associate with cold, hard data, was able to create something so profoundly human - a piece of art that could stir emotions and provoke thought.

That's the magic of AI art. It's not just about the novelty of a machine creating artwork. It's about witnessing a new form of artistic expression unfold before our very eyes.

Just like when we first saw Monet's dappled light effects or were left breathless by Van Gogh's vibrant, swirling skies, AI art offers a fresh perspective that challenges us to see the world differently.

And the best part? You, too, can become a part of this ground-breaking movement. As an art collector, delving into AI art isn't just an investment; it's a chance to participate in a defining moment in art history.

As we continue our journey into this captivating world of AI-generated art, I'll share with you some of my personal experiences, along with tips and insights on what to look for and how to appreciate and collect these digital masterpieces.

So, sit back, relax, and let's explore the beautiful, unexpected, and sometimes surreal world of AI art together.

Trust me, by the time we're done, you'll be as excited as I am about this new wave of creativity and will likely be eager to add a piece of AI art to your own collection. After all, who wouldn't want to own a piece of history in the making?

Background: Artificial Intelligence and Art

Let's take a stroll down memory lane. If we cast our minds back to the early days of our creative journey, the earliest artists used whatever they could find in their environment – think cave walls, natural pigments, stone, and bone.

Fast forward several centuries, we found new mediums like marble, oils, and canvas, and in more recent years, photography, and digital media. Each of these developments drastically transformed the way artists expressed themselves, leading to new artistic movements, styles, and delightful treasures!

Today, we find ourselves at yet another exciting turning point, where AI is stepping up as the new medium on the block.

But what exactly is AI? Well, in a nutshell, Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that simulates human intelligence in machines. But rather than just mimicking human behaviour, these machines can learn from experience, adjust to new inputs, and even perform human-like tasks.

A recreation of Michelangelo's iconic "Creation of Adam"

Impressive, isn't it? Especially for those of us who can remember the world before the internet and mobile phones.

Now, you might be wondering, "How did we get here? And what does AI have to do with art?" Well, let's hop in our time machine and rewind a little.

The relationship between technology and art is far from new. Let's take, for instance, the Camera Obscura, a device that led to the invention of photography.

It was initially used by artists to understand perspective and details more accurately. Remember the stunning detail in Vermeer's paintings? Many believe he used a Camera Obscura, and his works still captivate us centuries later!

(Ye Olde Selfie)

The advent of a new technology has usually been followed by crises of the demise of the current art form, for example the quote below from Constantijn Huygens, a prominent Dutch statesman, diplomat, and poet during the 17th century, known for his significant contributions to the cultural and intellectual life of the Dutch Golden Age.

It is impossible to express the beauty [of the camera obscura image] in words. The art of painting is dead, for this is life itself: or something higher, if we could find a word for it.
— Constantijn Huygens, private letter April 13, 1622

This news of the death of painting as we all know was very much premature and subsequently painted master pieces after 1622 and the Camera Obscura include:

  1. "Las Meninas" (1656) by Diego Velázquez: This painting is famous for its complex and innovative composition, presenting an almost interactive scene where the viewer is indirectly included in the painting.
  2. "The Starry Night" (1889) by Vincent van Gogh: One of the most renowned in Western art. It's known for its expressive and emotional style, with swirling patterns that depict the night sky.
  3. "The Persistence of Memory" (1931) by Salvador Dalí: As one of the most iconic pieces of the Surrealist movement, this painting is famous for its depiction of melting clocks, which has been interpreted as a commentary on the fluidity and relativity of time.
  4. "Guernica" (1937) by Pablo Picasso: This is a powerful political statement, and a modernist tour-de-force. Picasso painted it as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's devastating bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
  5. "No Woman, No Cry" (1998) by Chris Ofili: This painting made a significant impact when it was exhibited. Each tear of the crying woman in the portrait contains a tiny image that tells a story of a black woman's experience in Britain.

Or, consider the advent of Photoshop in the late 20th century. It revolutionized graphic design and photography, opening up a whole new world of digital art.

Many art students are often surprised when told that some of the contemporary artworks they study aren't created with a traditional paintbrush and palette but with a computer mouse and keyboard!

Works like "The Birth of Venus" by Anna Utopia Giordano in which she explores the depiction of the female body in modern society and how it largely differs from the past.

The representations create unrealistic goals towards fake perfection within women and their body through heavily photoshopping and editing already healthy and beautiful women.

Just as oil paint and Photoshop transformed their respective eras, AI art is creating a significant shift in today's art world. Its ability to learn from vast amounts of data and create something new is truly mind-boggling.

It's a bit like having a super-creative assistant who has learned from every artist in history and can now generate its own original works.

As Pablo Picasso once said, 'Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.'". AI knows all the rules…and it's now starting to break them...

But rather than stealing the show, AI is offering us a new way to engage with art. It's like an exciting new dance partner, leading us into uncharted territory, and challenging us to keep pace with its innovative moves. And just like any dance, it's not about one partner outdoing the other; it's about the magic they create together.

So, let's keep dancing, and explore how this innovative technology actually creates art!

Understanding AI Art Creation

Alright, let's get into the nitty-gritty: how exactly does AI create art?

Well, we’re not talking about R2-D2 with a paintbrush here. Instead, we're delving into the realm of algorithms, neural networks, and machine learning.

Let's start with the building blocks: neural networks. These are computer systems designed to mimic the way our human brains work.

They learn from examples, much like an apprentice Renaissance artist would study the masters. Just as you or I might have been awe-struck and inspired by the grandeur of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes, these algorithms learn from millions of artworks from different styles and periods.

The Creation of Adam reimagined with Algorithms

One of the most exciting technologies used in creating AI art is the Generative Adversarial Network, or GAN, as we AI enthusiasts love to call it.

Picture two AI systems having a friendly duel. One, the 'Generator,' creates a piece of art, while the other, the 'Discriminator,' judges it based on the examples it has studied. The Generator then refines its artwork based on the feedback, and this process continues until the Discriminator can't tell if the artwork is AI-generated or human-made. It's like having an enthusiastic art student and a strict art teacher inside the computer!

On a recent lunch with an artist friend, I explained this concept to them over a discussion around AI art and its impact on our creativity. I'll never forget the look of astonishment on her face when I told her about how AIs were creating art. "You mean, it's like a constant cycle of creation and critique until perfection is achieved?" she asked, her eyes wide. "Exactly!" I replied. I could see the wheels turning in her mind, contemplating the endless possibilities this technology could bring.

And oh, the possibilities! AI can produce a variety of art styles, from pieces that mimic classical art to ones that create entirely new and unique styles. It's like having a chameleon artist who can switch from being Van Gogh to Picasso to Pollock, and then transform into an entirely novel artist we've never seen before.

And the best part? These AI "artists" are never tired or uninspired. They don't have bad days or creative blocks. They continuously learn, improve, and create, pushing the boundaries of what we previously thought possible in the art world.

But this leads us to an intriguing question - how has AI influenced art styles? Well, let's dive into that next, shall we?

The Impact of AI on Artistic Styles

As we explore the world of AI-generated art, it's essential to understand how this technology has impacted and even created new artistic styles.

AI's influence on the art world can be compared to a kaleidoscope - it takes existing styles, adds a touch of its own flair, and creates mesmerizing new patterns.

One of the most fascinating aspects of AI art is the way it can blend different styles and techniques, resulting in unique and unexpected creations.

Remember that one time you accidentally mixed two different colours on your palette and discovered a new shade that you fell in love with? AI is doing that on a whole new level!

For instance, imagine an AI algorithm trained on Impressionist paintings by Monet and bold, geometric works by Mondrian. It could generate a piece that marries the soft, atmospheric quality of Impressionism with the striking lines and shapes of Neoplasticism. It's like having a conversation between two distinct artistic movements, creating a visual dialogue that transcends time and space.

One day, while visiting a gallery showcasing AI-generated art, I was struck by a particular piece that blended the fluidity of Abstract Expressionism with the vibrant colors and patterns of Pop Art. It was as if Jackson Pollock and Roy Lichtenstein had come together to create something entirely new. I stood there for what felt like hours, mesmerized by the unexpected harmony of two seemingly disparate styles.

But AI art doesn't stop there. It's not just about remixing existing styles; it's also capable of developing entirely new artistic languages. As these algorithms continue to learn and evolve, they're beginning to generate pieces that defy categorization. Artworks that push us to question our preconceived notions of what art should look like and how it should make us feel just as earlier new waves like the impressionists did.

A friend of mine, an AI researcher, once told me that what excites him most about AI art is the potential for the technology to create new forms of expression that we've never seen before. And I wholeheartedly agree. The possibilities are truly endless, and we're just at the beginning of this exciting journey.

AI Art and the Art Market

As we navigate the intriguing intersection of AI and art, one can't help but ponder over its impact on the art market. After all, the art world is not just about creativity and expression, but it also holds significant cultural and economic value.

According to recent studies, the worldwide economic value of the art market has been steadily increasing over the years. In 2021, the global art market was estimated to be worth around $50 billion, showcasing its immense economic significance. However, the integration of AI in the art industry is set to revolutionize the market even further.

Projections indicate that AI art will play a substantial role in the future of the art market with experts anticipate a substantial growth in the adoption and appreciation of AI-generated artworks.

By 2025, it is estimated that AI art will contribute significantly to the overall art market, reaching a value of approximately $2.3 billion. This represents a remarkable increase, demonstrating the growing acceptance and market demand for AI-generated artistic creations.

AI's impact on the art market extends beyond its economic value. AI algorithms have the ability to analyse vast amounts of data, including historical art trends, styles, and techniques, to create unique and innovative artworks.

This synthesis of human creativity and machine intelligence has the potential to redefine traditional artistic boundaries, attract new collectors, and expand the global art market's reach.

Moreover, AI art also presents new opportunities for artists and collectors alike. Artists can harness the power of AI to experiment with novel techniques and mediums, exploring uncharted territories in the creative process.

Collectors, meanwhile, can diversify their portfolios by investing in AI-generated artworks, adding a unique and futuristic element to their collections.

AI art, much like any groundbreaking movement, was met with a fair share of scepticism initially.

Remember when Impressionism was first introduced? Critics scoffed at what they saw as unfinished, sketch-like paintings. But over time, as understanding and appreciation grew, Impressionism became one of the most beloved art movements. I believe we're witnessing a similar journey with AI art.

When "Portrait of Edmond de Belamy" was auctioned for an astonishing $432,500, it sent shockwaves through the art world. This event signalled a turning point, a moment of recognition that AI-generated art holds substantial economic value. Since then, the market for AI art has been steadily growing, with more collectors showing interest in these unique creations.

But as we venture into this new terrain, there are questions and challenges to consider.

For instance, who owns the copyright to an AI artwork? The AI artist, The programmer, the AI, or the person who owns the AI?

And how do we value an artwork that can be replicated with the click of a button? These are complex issues that we, as a society, will need to navigate as AI continues to evolve.

However, amidst all these questions, one thing is clear: AI art is here to stay and is reshaping our understanding of creativity and originality.

This emerging genre not only challenges conventional artistry but also has the potential to democratize the world of art, allowing individuals across the globe to access and engage with artistic expression in unprecedented ways.

Imagine for example a future where everyone has an outlet for their creativity impulses instead of just being passive consumers content. The big corporations with 'stuff' to sell might not be too happy but you would make a strong case that the world would be a better place for it.

Much like the rise of digital photography, AI art prompts us to rethink, to reassess, and to reimagine the possibilities inherent in our art, our culture, and indeed, our world.

It is not merely a tech novelty, but a vibrant, complex, and evolving field that holds promise and intrigue for artists, collectors, and spectators alike.

And while there is no definitive roadmap for this journey, the exploration of AI art promises a fascinating voyage into the relationship between man, machine, and the timeless quest for beauty and meaning, a seeking out of new worlds and frontiers.

The Future of AI and Art: A Synergy to Watch

As we reach the end of our journey, it's important to look ahead and consider the future of AI art. And I for one am very excited about the endless possibilities that this synergy brings to the table.

One of the most significant aspects of AI's impact on art is the potential for collaboration. Artists can now work alongside AI, using it as a tool to enhance their creativity and explore new avenues of expression.

At Pixel Gallery we have had the pleasure of witnessing artists explore this new frontier with AI art, and the results have been truly awe-inspiring.

By leveraging AI's capabilities, they've been able to push the boundaries of their own artistic practice, creating works that are fresh, innovative, and unlike anything we've seen before.

Moreover, AI-generated art can also serve as a bridge between different cultures and time periods. By studying and learning from a vast array of artistic styles, these algorithms can create unique blends that foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared artistic heritage. Just imagine an artwork that seamlessly melds elements of Chinese ink painting with the vibrancy of Mexican muralism, or a piece that fuses Renaissance techniques with contemporary street art. The possibilities are limitless!

Beyond the realm of visual arts, AI's potential to revolutionize other creative fields is equally exciting. From healthcare, finance to music composition AI holds the power to transform the way we engage with and experience all aspects of life.

Despite the challenges and questions that lie ahead, the future of AI art is undeniably bright.

As we continue to embrace the power of AI in the art world, we are presented with an opportunity to grow, learn, and redefine what it means to be creative.

By joining forces with this groundbreaking technology, we can create masterpieces that challenge our perceptions, evoke deep emotions, and ultimately, bring us closer to understanding the boundless potential of human creativity.

AI preserves Art

In the realm of art conservation, AI art play a significant role in preserving and restoring our artistic heritage. Advanced algorithms could be trained to identify signs of deterioration, suggest appropriate restoration methods, or even digitally restore artworks to their original glory.

Tips for Collecting AI Art: Navigating the New Frontier

I'd like to offer some insights and advice for those of you who might be considering dipping your toes into the world of AI art collection. Here are some tips to guide you on this unique adventure:

  1. Educate Yourself: Just like with any art form, understanding the nuances of AI art is key. Familiarize yourself with the technology behind it, the major players in the field, and the different styles and techniques being used. The more you know, the better equipped you'll be to appreciate and evaluate AI-generated artworks.
  2. Look Beyond the Hype: AI art is a hot topic right now, and it can be easy to get swept up in the excitement. But remember, just because an artwork was created by AI doesn't automatically make it valuable or interesting. Evaluate the artwork on its own merits: Does it move you? Does it make you think? Is it visually compelling?
  3. Trust Your Taste: While expert opinions and market trends can provide useful guidance, don't forget to trust your own judgment. If an AI artwork speaks to you, that personal connection is invaluable.
  4. Embrace Diversity: One of the most exciting aspects of AI art is its diversity. From AI-generated paintings that emulate traditional styles to more experimental, abstract pieces, there's a wide range of AI art out there. Don't limit yourself to one type or style.
  5. Consider the Artist-AI Collaboration: When looking at AI art, consider not just the end product, but also the process that led to its creation. How did the artist or programmer work with the AI? How much creative control did they exert over the final output? This can add an extra layer of appreciation to the artwork.
  6. Navigating Authenticity: Unlike traditional art, AI art can be reproduced perfectly with a click of a button. This raises questions about authenticity and scarcity, which are important factors in art collection. Look for AI artists and platforms that address this issue, for instance, by providing certificates of authenticity or using blockchain technology to create limited editions.
  7. Engage with the Community: The AI art community is a vibrant and welcoming space full of artists, collectors, researchers, and enthusiasts. Engaging with this community can provide invaluable insights and help you stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Conclusion: Embracing the Art of the Future

As we reach the end of this exploration into the captivating world of AI art, it's clear that we are witnessing the dawn of a compelling new era in creative expression.

Just as the advent of photography or the discovery of new painting techniques transformed art history, the emergence of AI art is poised to redefine our perceptions of art.

Remember the story of the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1874? The artworks presented there were unlike anything people had ever seen, and they were largely met with ridicule and derision. Yet, those artists and their revolutionary ideas transformed the art world forever. Today, we stand at a similar crossroads with AI art.

The fusion of art and artificial intelligence brings forth an intriguing paradox - the union of human emotion and machine precision. It challenges our traditional understanding of art, invites us to question the nature of creativity, and opens up a vast new realm of possibilities for artistic expression.

Art has always been a reflection of our times, and AI art is no exception. It mirrors our increasingly digitized lives, our relentless pursuit of technological innovation, and our ongoing quest to understand and replicate the complexities of human intelligence.

For collectors, venturing into AI art is more than an investment. It's a chance to be part of a historic moment in the art world, to support innovative artists and ideas, and to explore the profound questions and thrilling possibilities that AI art brings to the fore.

Over the coming years, AI art will challenge us to examine what it really means to be a person, in a world where machines will be able to outperform human beings in tasks previously exclusive to human being.

Cogito, ergo sum

The French mathematician and philosopher René Descartes, famously said "I think, therefore I am" but in a world where AI too can 'think' then what is the true nature of our reality and existence and what makes us uniquely human?

And what better way to discover the real truth than by stress testing preconceived ideas of what it means to be human, this is the gauntlet laid down by AI art to human creativity.

In chemistry for example substances are sometimes added to another substance to purify them. In the process of Recrystallization, a solid compound is dissolved in a hot solvent, allowing impurities to remain in the solution. As the solution cools, pure crystals reform, separating from the impurities.

It's process I used during my Chemistry A' Level to make and purify Aspirin. (Ok since you asked so nicely I'll tell you how it's done...After synthesizing aspirin from salicylic acid obtained from a Willow bark and acetic anhydride, impurities like unreacted acids remain. Dissolving the crude aspirin in hot ethanol followed by slow cooling and scratching induces recrystallization, resulting in pure aspirin.)

But back to AI art..

As we stand at the threshold of this exciting new frontier, I invite you all - artists, collectors, sceptics, and enthusiasts - to embrace the world of AI art.

Let's explore it with curiosity, engage with it critically, and above all, let's allow ourselves to be moved, challenged, and inspired by the art of the future.

As we move forward, let's remember that at its core, Art - whether created by a human hand or an AI algorithm or a fusion of both – has the power to reflect, to connect, and to profoundly touch our human spirit.

The story of AI art has just begun to be written, and the beauty of it unlike previous artistic stories is that we all have a chance to be part of it...I, for one, am very excited to see where this journey into the real final frontier takes us

A conversation between a Cave painter and a Renaissance artist

Cave Painter (CP): Look here, youngling! I smear my hands in the earth, reach out and leave my mark on the stone. Raw, primal, connected to the land. This is real art!

Renaissance Painter (RP): Quite fascinating, old man, but rather rudimentary, don't you think? I study light, form, perspective - elevating the human figure to an almost divine level. Surely, that's more sophisticated art!

CP: Ah! 'Sophistication', he says! Your forms and light and perspective...do they capture the rhythm of the hunt, the dance of the flames, the whisper of the wind?

RP: Well, not exactly. But I capture the glory of man, his intellectual and emotional depths. My works hang in the grandest of cathedrals!

CP: And my works hang in the grandest of caves! What's your point?

RP: Simply that art has evolved. We've moved from mere depiction to exploration and celebration of the human spirit.

CP: Evolved, yes, but not replaced. The spirit of my strokes, in their simplicity, captures a raw, emotional truth. That too is celebration, of a different kind. What's 'real' art, after all?

RP: 'Real' art... maybe it's not about sophistication or simplicity, but about truth. Whether in a grand cathedral or a humble cave, it's that which stirs the soul.

CP: Ha! Stirring the soul, are we? Well, you and your fancy words! But, you might be onto something. A truth, a stirring, a connection...maybe that is 'real' art.

RP: Indeed, my friend. It seems art is a language we both speak, with different accents perhaps but with the same soul.

AI Artist enters the stage…

THE END
